What is Philadelphia Cervical Collar (Rigid Neck Orthosis)?

The Philadelphia cervical collar is a rigid, two-piece neck orthosis that provides firm immobilisation of the cervical spine — far more support than a soft collar. It is used on medical advice for stable cervical fractures, after neck surgery, for severe cervical radiculopathy, and where significant restriction of neck movement is needed. The moulded design has reinforced front and back panels with chin and occipital (back-of-head) supports to control flexion, extension and rotation, plus a tracheal opening for airway access, ventilation and comfort. Firm foam padding lines the plastic shell to protect the skin, and hook-and-loop straps hold it securely. Fit and duration of use should be set by a doctor or physiotherapist. Available in sizes; padding is removable for cleaning.

Frequently asked questions

When is a Philadelphia collar used?+

It is used on medical advice to firmly immobilise the neck — for stable cervical fractures, after surgery, or for severe neck problems. For everyday neck ache a soft collar is usually enough.

Should a doctor fit it?+

Yes. Because it restricts movement significantly and is used for serious neck conditions, the size, fit and how long to wear it should be decided by a doctor or physiotherapist.
