The single most common reason an anti-dandruff shampoo appears not to work is contact time. Wet the hair, work the shampoo into the scalp rather than the lengths, and leave it on the scalp for three to five minutes before rinsing. Rinsed off immediately, an active ingredient has no chance to act.

Use two to three times a week, or as the label directs, and follow with conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends if your hair is dry. Avoid getting it in the eyes and rinse with water if you do. See a doctor or dermatologist if the scalp is inflamed, weeping, painful, or if flaking continues despite several weeks of correct use — persistent scalp conditions can need prescription treatment.
